PDT Story - TIE HANDS of COMMITTEE? - City building site in sight?

quote:

City building site in sight?

Thursday, July 13, 2006 11:55 PM EDT

The Issue: Identifying where, how much and when for a new building

Our View: Committee selection just may build consensus on issue

Portsmouth City Council President Howard Baughman on Monday made a prudent move in the interest of finding the future home for Portsmouth city government.

He selected a committee of Mayor Jim Kalb, council member Mike Mearan and tax-paying businessmen Kevin Johnson, Terry Ockerman and Jim Robinson with the expectation that during the next two months the five of them will meet with other members of the tax-paying public and develop a plan that can answer the “where, how much and when” of this project.

The welcome mat is out for any of us to share our views on the issue with the committee. It is our opportunity to be part of the solution.

The boundaries that the committee must operate within have not been communicated. On Wednesday, Baughman said those would be shared with the committee no later than next week.

Those boundaries should allow a thorough review of historical issues that have continually sidelined the project, identify exactly what kind of building/space city government needs for now and future growth, find all potential sites, offer full disclosure of potential funding for architectural, remodeling, acquisition and/or construction costs, and exclude no one from being part of this process. If these conditions are met, we believe a realistic, time-bound plan can be presented to City Council for its review.

We applaud Baughman's move. It is indicative of good government.

How's that old saying go?

"Fool me once, shame on YOU.
Fool me twice, shame on ME."

Would be prudent to refrain from issuing Kudo's until this thing nears its conclusion... again. Else, shame on you PDT.

There is way... way too much factual history to know it is NOT PROPER to applaud any of council right now.. pertaining to this matter.

It will be very interesting to see the proposals from this group. I'm betting they can't agree on one. I think the idea of the committee is a good one but would have hoped to see some other folks on the committee also--other wards.

Should be only registered city voters. Should be one from each ward. Should not be picked by Johnsons cousin nor should he have any say in what their boundries are simply because he is Johnsons cousin. If it were not for Howard pushing so hard.....we would not have had the Marting building dumped on us so quickly and behind the scenes------

I was there and saw it happen.

Anyhow------Terry is a smart dude as is Merean.... Lets see how it works out.

Yep. I am gonna hold off with any more comments on this committee for a while until I see what type (if any) recommendations are made. I really do think a opportunity for others in the community, one from each ward anyway, should have been on the committee (if one from each ward was interested) and I think some type of announcement should have been made giving people who were interested a chance to apply. If it prolonged it a week or two, its not like this has been a problem that hasn't been around for awhile so a couple more weeks would not have hurt. We don't want the way the committee was formed however to become more of an issue than what the committee's goal is so, again, lets see what happens for a little while.

PHS should be saved no matter what. It's the only historical building left. If they tear it down It will be like this town never had a past. Is that why they did the mural project so they could depict the past and then tear it all down for Hatcherville? This was the plan I believe.

SINCE THE MURALS, LOOK AT WHAT HAS BEEN TORE DOWN.

I tell you, they would k**l us all if it wasn't for the taxes we pay. We never won the war. They just couldn't afford to lose us. But, the Indians didn't pay taxes so, Bye! Bye!
We should unite to save our old High School Building. It has been the cornerstone of this city. It we loose our cornerstone then what kind city will we become. Don't let them tear it down. Make them use it.

Sorry Moe.....They were suppose to place the fence around it yesterday to begin demolition. It is a done deal. Gym is to be kept.

As to the Committee-----Greene is correct... Time will tell. If Baughman wanted somebody to roll over.... He picked the wrong ones for sure.... None of them will.

Lee, I have heard different stories on that gym....some say it goes, others say it stays. Have you heard if the school district is going to maintain and heat it or is some thing else in the works?

Since the gym building is basically across the street from the new school. And the fact it is basically self-contained....

Anything less than keeping it in working order would be a complete lack of responsibilty to the community.

Surely this talk is only that.

Gotta agree with you here but if something is to be done better hurry the wrecking ball is starting to swing

[ I was talking with one of the construction forman this morning at Tim Hortons and we ended op on the topic of the new schools and eventually on the demise of PHS he told me" it was scheduled to be taken down in its entirety including the gym." He also said "the fence was going op around the school and demoition was to start".The part I found most interesting was the fact he said" the demolition was scheduled to start next month but they had been given orders to start the demolition now because they were told that the city had a new building committee searching for a new city building and they didnt want them looking at PHS as a possible solution",I asked who supposedly gave the orders ? He shrugged and said" they dont give me those deatils but Im assuming it was a agreement between the city and the school."

There could be some truth to that......Broughton seems to want more and more into the city government for some reason and she knows there are a lot of the SOGP folks who don't want PHS looked at as the new city building so there very well could be an agreement between "some" in the city government and the school district to get it torn down fast. Wonder if Hatcher and Johnson's construction guys got the bid?
