SSU to Close 3rd Street?

SSU has asked council to close 3rd Street. Is this wise since traffic will be routed to Streets with elementary schools? It will also create more bottlenecks in getting through town.

Saveourcity:

You are right. Traffic will be more of a puzzle and will further damage downtown business.

There are some secret plans that are not being told
at this time. Right now we are getting falsehoods and lying propaganda. "The rest of the story will be told
after the mob gets Third Street.

I JUST FINISHED WRITING A FEW LINES ABOUT
THIS MISTAKE FOR PORTSMOUTH CITY.

UNSAFE AT ANY PRICE!
WILL BIG DOLLAR SIGNS OVERCOME
 THOUGHTS OF SAFETY FOR CHILDREN?

Many persons in Portsmouth Government have been
persuaded to close Third Street to satisfy unjustified
requests; “the rest of the story” has not been revealed.

THE CLOSING OF THIRD STREET, BY A SMALL MINORITY OF SPECIAL INTEREST PERSONS AT SHAWNEE STATE UNIVERSITY (SSU) AND AT CITY HALL, WILL FORCE PRESENT THIRD STREET TRAFFIC DOWN FOURTH STREET PAST THE HUNDREDS OF SMALL CHILDREN AT THE NEW ELEMENTARY SCHOOL.
THE INTENDED CLOSURE OF THIRD STREET IS NOT FITTING FOR SAFETY OF THE SMALL CHILDREN ATTENDING THE FOURTH STREET ELEMENTARY SCHOOL, AND WILL POSSIBLY HINDER AMBULANCES, POLICE, FIRE OTHER EMERGENCY VEHICLES IN TIMES OF FIRE AND OTHER DISASTERS OR DISORDERS ON CAMPUS.

CLOSING IS UNWANTED, UNNEEDED AND UNSAFE.

THIRD STREET CLOSURE HAS BEEN ADVOCATED BY MANY WHO ARE NOT REALLY CONNECTED WITH THE CITY AND HAVE NO REAL CONCERN FOR THE INTERESTS OF THE REST OF THE CITIZENS OF PORTSMOUTH AND…… LITTLE OR NO CONCERN FOR THE SAFETY OF THE SMALL SCHOOL CHILDREN ON FOURTH STREET NOR FOR THE THOUSAND ADULT STUDENTS NOW LIVING ON THE SSU CAMPUS.

Third Street belongs to all the citizens of Portsmouth.
Third Street does not belong to the SSU President, nor to the Portsmouth City School Superintendent, nor to the voracious developers who have plans in that area for their own selfish financial betterment.

Third Street in Portsmouth belongs to the citizens of Portsmouth.

This occurrence of contested street closure has provided the City Council a blessed opportunity to stand on their own two feet and demonstrate to the people of Portsmouth and the surrounding area that they, the councilmen, are not merely controlled votes by special interests.

Council may best show the citizens of Portsmouth that Council truly has fair consideration for the interests, opinions and desires of the citizens in mind by voting to give the citizens of Portsmouth an American opportunity to make the decision of closing Third Street an issue to be decided by a vote of all the citizens at the next general election.

This would be no expense to the city and could aid in beginning a healthy togetherness for council and citizens for the betterment of all.

Re: SSU to Close 3rd Street?

You were right, Big Jim.

Council did not vote for the citizens. They voted for the fat cat developers with the secret plans.

Worse yet, the Council gave SSU the land. Most other land and properties received by SSU were paid for.
Why should we give SSU property. Mike Mearan signed the Jewish church over to SSU for a small fortune and made them agree to let Mike's people use it as long as any of they live.

Our city council has descended to a new low and Council President Sturgill has removed more of the citizens' rights by passing ordinances without the three readings required by Charter law. This removal of citizens' rights was crude, and is a message to the people of Portsmouth that Democracy has been arrogantly set aside by Steven Sturgill and company.
This is wrong, everlastingly wrong to violate and abuse American citizens rights as has recently been done.

Steven Sturgill is well educated and has special knowledge of citizens ability to bring legal action against elected officials.

This is Portsmouth.

There has been no government by the people in this city for the past 32 years and the Un-American
acts of the present Council President and other members is disgustingly less representative of the people than any in my long memory.

Now after putting up in deep deficit by giving away property, money and taking away our freedom of speech, they are going to vote themselves raises of $5,000. to 6,000. a year.

We must vote these rascals our of office. There are at least two members of our council that have geen turned out of offfice by the voters before.

IT IS RECALL TIME AGAIN. LESS THAN TEN YEARS AGO THE CITIZENS RECALLED THE MAYOR AND TWO OF THE CITY COUNCILPERSONS WERE RECALLED.

THE CRIMES BEING COMMITTED BY THE PRESENT GANG IN COUNCIL ARE WORSE THAN THE ACTS BY THE COUNCIL GANG IN 2004.

COUNCIL PRESIDENT STURGILL AND OTHER COUNCIL MEMBERS HAVE REPEATEDLY DENIED CITIZENS THE RIGHT TO VOTE ON MANY ISSUES. MOST RECENTLY
STURGILL AND THE COUNCIL REFUSED TO ALLOW CITIZENS THE RIGHT TO VOTE ON THE LAND AND STREET AWAY TO SHAWNEE STATE.

WE CAN NOT AFFORD TO HAVE REPRESENTATIVES WHO ONLY REPRESENT THE PEOPLE IN POWER AND THEN ASK US FOR TENS OF THOUSANDS OF MORE DOLLARS FOR A PAY RAISE FOR THEMSELVES.
