In 2009, Portsmouth voters passed an amendment limiting bonded indebtedness by the city to $100,000 without taking it to the voters. Now Portsmouth City Council is taking the first step in reversing that decision by passing an ordinance to take it back to voters for re-consideration..............................

Stop the madness don't fall for this trick, this is the only thing keeping your property taxes under control. This amendment was passed because of the Marting's building fiasco which they raised property taxes to buy the two million dollar building. If voters, vote to repeal this charter amendment look out it's on the 12 million dollar Marting's renovation and the property taxes will skyrocket to pay for it.

Don't fall for the rabbit in the hat trick VOTE NO AGAINST REPEALING THE AMENDMENT !

The citizens of Portsmouth really need to be informed of this effort by certain city officials, led by Kevin W. Johnson to repeal this provision of the Charter. Just look at the title of the Section "Limitation of Taxing Authority". Repealing this provision will give six people [city council] virtually 'unlimited' power to raise taxes to pay for debt they incur. This provision is what has kept our real estate taxes from increasing the last six years. It more than likely would mean the City would spend more of our tax dollars on the worthless Martings [sign in to see URL] provision simply requires the city to place any debt it places on the taxpayers be placed on the ballot and voted on.

They have increased our garbage fee, water and sewer fees, income taxes, and various other fees since the provision was passed in 2008. You can bet you will see an increase in our real estate tax if the provision is repealed.
