PDT Letter to Editor - WHAT IF IN YOUR BACKYARD? - Saving Lives.

quote:

Saving lives and protecting people's rights abroad should be main priority

As a citizen of the United States of America, a member of the human race and a follower of the way, I am appalled at Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice and our nation's stance on the crisis in the Middle East.

What caring, humane, concerned person would not want to call a cease-fire first and foremost? People are dying. That is the bottom line. People are being injured, deprived of their homes and are dying. Do we have no love for humanity? Do we not care for anyone but ourselves?

I was raised to believe we lived in a nation that honored the people's rights to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. Surely we don't mean only for ourselves. Surely we don't mean only for the wealthy and elite who can hire bodyguards and are surrounded by military protection. I have been disillusioned recently by political events, but this has to be the most blatant, irresponsible, cold, hateful stance we have taken.

All other leaders at the summit in Rome wanted an immediate cessation of hostilities as called for by Kofi Annan from the United Nations. The United Sates alone held that the continued killing of innocent citizens should not be halted. IF our national leaders making these decisions would be forced to go to Lebanon or northern Israel to live in a regular house, with no secret servicemen, bodyguards or military escorts, perhaps they would see it differently.

I don't pretend to have all the answers on how to solve the problems between the Lebanese and Israelis, but encouraging the end of ruthless killing must surely be a first step to help diffuse the hate, hurt and anger experienced by those living in this wartorn land.

Please write or call your representatives and senators to let them know that this is not how people in the United States want to be seen by others in the world. Let us be seen as people who hold all life precious - above nationalism and politics.

In order to have answers.. you first have to have questions.. and discovery.

A Hypothetical (as much as I dont like hypos):

What if there was Militant Group living across the Ohio River in Deep Woods KY somewhere. And this group fired on various other groups within Scioto County OH?????

Could only stand so much of this random violence until you took matters in your own hands and said the Hell with the State or Feds.

Obviosly, the Lebanese feel reluctant or are powerless to prevent this group from firing at Israel.

People are the same almost everywhere. Governments Change... how people react remains the same.

So... Israel is in a mode now where they say enough is enough (that group has been building up across their border for years... unchecked.

HOWEVER... once Israel declared itself a state in 1948, it has displaced people out of their own backyards. In both 1948 and 1967.

"They" are still pissed about that and want their land back.
Just as any of us would want our land back if taken away.

CONFLICT - IN ITS PURIST FORM. Such absolute conflict induces war... in its purist form. Recent modern war has shown that it takes total victory to subdue the other side.

Question is.. who will subdue the other?

QUESTION: How can Anyone tell the difference (DIFFERENTIATE) between HEZBOLLAH (Hizbullah) terrorist millitants and a LEBANESE civilian?

Do they wear a uniform or some insignia identifying themselves as THE HEZBOLLAH?

The answer is, "NO you can't". That is and has been a huge problem since WW2. There is no more honer to show what you're allegiance to any side is with a uniform. That's the terrorist problem. In 'NAM you had to watch out for 10 year olds on bikes. They had rifles, grenades and other explosive devises, and were willing to blow things up for less than $10 U.S.
